Origami is a great activity to work on a variety of skills, including fine motor skills (such as pincer grasp), hand strengthening, bilateral coordination, sequencing, and visual motor skills (such as hand eye coordination). These skills involved in origami are foundational to school tasks, such as handwriting and folding paper.
In this video, your child will follow along to make a dog and a frog to work on these skills. You’ll need a square sheet of paper, rectangle piece of paper, and a marker. Remind your child to look and check that the corners are touching before folding and encourage them to pinch the creases using their thumb and pointer finger.
Extensions: Your child may want to get involved in tasks around the home. A great task that involves folding is folding clothes or napkins. This is a great way to incorporate the activity on those busy days!
Tips: If you child is finding it tricky to handle the paper, consider using a thicker or larger sheet of paper. To engage your child, let them decorate their animal origami with textas, stickers, crayons, etc.
