Dressing is an important self-care skill for establishing your child’s independence. In this activity, your child will practice pulling up sleeves to work on hand strength and grip, and crossing midline.
The ability to pull sleeves on and off is useful not only for long sleeve tops and jumpers, but also pants and socks (which require the same motion). This helps facilitate independent dressing at home and at school, such as getting dressed in the morning, undressing before shower, and taking jumper off in the playground.
For this activity, you’ll need a knee-high sock and small toys. Place the small toy inside the sock. Remind your child to use their other hand to shuffle the sock along their arm to reach the toy, rather than shaking the toy out.
Tips: To encourage engagement, let your child choose the toy and frame the activity as a treasure hunt!
