Creating a lounge room obstacle course and packing it away is equally as fun and challenging as the course itself. The heavy work required to lift, pull and push items provides calming and organising sensory input through proprioception. Completing an obstacle course also naturally provides sensory input when moving through them, actions such as balancing, jumping over and climbing under contribute to your child’s sensory experience and support integration. They also build on gross motor skills, planning and sequencing.
Using various items from the lounge room like cushions, pillows, blankets and boxes. Your child can create an obstacle course in the lounge room. You can help your child in doing so but keep in mind we want to see them using their big muscles to move cushions and push them into place. This is called heavy work and is a great sensory activity to provide proprioceptive input.
Once built your child can complete the course and change it to make it more challenging or easier along the way. This is great problem solving. Your child can complete this activity by themselves, or you may wish to do it as a family.
